Mental health and wellbeing of postgraduate researchers: exploring the relationship between mental health literacy, help-seeking behaviour, psychological distress, and wellbeing

Studies of Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) have highlighted that the population may be at risk developing symptoms common mental health problems. Early intervention and preventative measures reduce this risk, such as improving literacy (MHL). However, it is unclear what relationship between MHL outcomes help-seeking behaviour, psychological distress wellbeing, in PGRs. Therefore, current study aimed to explore relationship. A secondary aim was compare data collected from PGRs with undergraduate students. Two hundred forty-one two universities England completed an anonymous online quantitative survey, reporting on their MHL, distress, addition demographic academic characteristics. Results indicated 70% were experiencing categorised mild severe distress. Stepwise multiple regressions revealed lower levels wellbeing predicted higher behaviour.
